Molasses Cake

Molasses was sometimes more available than sugar. A favorite topping for mush, it was a common ingredient in the pantry or cellar.

Ingrediënten

  • ¾ cup molasses
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup sour milk or buttermilk
  • cups flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • ¼ cup boiling water

Instructies

  • Combine molasses, egg, and milk thoroughly.
  • Stir in flour.
  • Dissolve soda in boiling water, then add to batter.
  • Bake in a greased and floured 8” square cake pan at 375° for 30–45 minutes.
