Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Grease and flour a 5×9-inch (13×23 cm) loaf pan.
In a mixing bowl, lightly beat the egg.
Then, beat in the softened butter and sugar until the mixture is smooth.
Stir in 1 tablespoon of orange zest, 2/3 cup of orange juice, the boiling water, and vanilla extract.
In another bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Stir in the chopped dates and walnuts.
Add the flour mixture to the egg mixture and stir to combine until the ingredients are moistened.
Spoon the batter into the prepared loaf pan.
Bake the bread in the preheated oven for about 1 hour or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.
Allow the bread to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
