  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 Tbsp poppy seeds

For the Vanilla-Bean Sugar Cookies:

  • ½ cup butter softened
  • ½ cup shortening
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla bean paste
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp cream of tartar
  • tsp salt
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour

For the Spicy Sugar Cookies:

  • ½ cup butter softened
  • ½ cup shortening
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp cream of tartar
  • tsp salt
  • 3 egg yolks
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp cayenne pepper

Instructies

For the Lemon-Poppy Seed Sugar Cookies:

  • In a small bowl, combine the sugar and 1 Tbsp. lemon zest.
  • Use your fingertips to rub the lemon zest into the sugar until the sugar becomes very fragrant.
  • Add the lemon-scented sugar mixture with the baking soda and 2 Tbsp. poppy seeds to the basic sugar cookie dough recipe provided earlier.
