Whole Wheat Bread from Phillis Pellman Good

Reflecting the more health-conscious attitude of many Amish cooks today, this recipe uses honey in place of sugar and whole wheat flour instead of all white flour.

Ingrediënten

  • 2 packages dry yeast
  • 4 cups warm water
  • ½ cup margarine or butter softened
  • ¼ cup molasses
  • ½ cup honey
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 6 cups whole wheat flour
  • 4 cups white flour

Instructies

  • Dissolve yeast in warm water.
  • Combine margarine, molasses, honey, and salt and mix well.
  • Add yeast mixture.
  • Gradually add flour.
  • Turn dough onto floured board and knead until smooth, about 7–10 minutes.
  • Place in greased bowl and let rise until double.
  • Punch down.
  • Let dough rest a few minutes.
  • Shape into 4 loaves.
  • Place in greased bread pans and let rise about 1 hour.
  • Bake at 375° for 35–40 minutes.
