Waffles are a rare treat; after all, how can one cook keep many hungry mouths happy with only one waffle iron? Some women tried, under less than ideal conditions!
“I remember Mother making waffles on the range,” one graying grandmother smiled. “She would take the lid off and fit a round waffle iron down into the ‘burner’ opening above the flame on the range. It was a messy business, and hard to have the fire just right, so she didn’t do it very often. And those were heavy waffles!”
